The Turn of the Screw - Henry James and Britten

PROJECT WORK by María Luisa Caballero
The Turn of the Screw

The project I propose is about the opera composed by Britten based on the novella by Henry James with the same title, The Turn of the Screw. To make things easier, tell the students that they are going to read the libretto by Mayfanwy Piper (1911-1997), wife of the artist John Piper. whose working relationship with Benjamin Britten began with The Rape of Lucrecia, for which he designed the scenery.

The adaptation of the novella into an opera obviously posed a number of difficulties. For example, in the novella the story is told in the third person, the Governess is the narrator. Henry James establishes an ambiguity about whether the narrator actually does see ghosts or whether they are just figments of her overactive imagination. It's Mayfanwy Piper the librettist who turns the ghosts of Peter Quint and Miss Jessel into characters. Neither of them speak in James' novella but in the opera they not only speak, they also engage in dialogue together.

It could be a good idea to ask the Music Department for help and collaboration, and the music teacher could introduce the students into Britten's opera and in particular, this one.

PRONUNCIATION AND PHONETICS

You can find minimal pairs in section D of this book that are really useful for the practice of difficult vowel and consonant sounds for Spanish speakers. The rest of the sections are very useful as well, dealing with single phonemes and comparing them in texts and with exercises. It has also got a CD with the recordings.
